Basic, known today as Classic , was one of LEGO's main product lines that used system bricks and consisted of sets focused solely on the building aspect of LEGO.

The sets were composed primarily of simple, basic LEGO System bricks and contained few, if any, of the highly specialized pieces found in LEGO's minifigure-compatible play themes such as Space or City.

In addition to the sets of these themes, the basic sets contained instructions and ideas for more than one main model and stimulated creativity by using simple pieces with high reuse value. The main aim was to inspire children to make their own models with these bricks and to introduce young children to normal LEGO play themes.

The theme evolved from the Universal Building Sets series and was introduced in 1985, when the Basic name first appeared in catalogs and on boxes. The theme was replaced in 1996 by the similar FreeStyle line, until it was discontinued in 1998 and Basic was temporarily brought back. In 2001 it was finally replaced by Creator and Designer.

One of Basic's most important innovations was the bucket, an assortment of stones related to a specific subject or simply cast in the same color, sold in a large plastic bucket with giant studs on the lid. Buckets are still being sold.

Basic sets had varying levels of complexity, ranging from simple sets with only a few rough parts to elaborately designed vehicles. Those sets usually do not include minifigures, although there are occasional exceptions. The sets also contain a varied range of stones. Sometimes they contain propellers, flowers and other rare elements.
